Junior Vice Commander

Derrick Flanagan

July  2008

Comrades,

I would like to start my first news letter article by thanking all of you for electing me to be the next Junior Vice Commander of this great Post. I’d also like to congratulate all the other incoming officers this year, and say Bravo Zulu to all the outgoing officers from last year.

Also, I’d like to say “Congratulations” to our in coming 2nd District Commander, Glenn Holman. Great job to every one!

As you all know, this is a year of firsts, with Melissa as our first female Commander, and my self as the youngest person to hold an office in the Post. It will be an interesting year.

Now on to business: Buddy Poppies!

We had sixteen volunteers for the Memorial Day weekend. Excellent turn-out and a great job to all of you who sacrificed your time. We raised approximately $2,800 – just over $1,000 of that was in the first day alone. Great job!

The VFW has a couple of scholarship programs – Voice of Democracy and Patriots’ Pen; and if you know of any students, please pass this information along. I am the Point of Contact for these programs. Dead line for submissions will be 1 November.

VOD: As you all know, the Voice of Democracy program is an essay competition open to high school students from 9th thru 12th grades, designed to foster Patriotism by allowing students to voice their opinions in a three- to five-minute essay based on an annual theme. Students compete for scholarships ranging up to $16,000; and the first place winner from the Department also receives an all-expenses-paid trip to our Nation’s Capital. This year’s theme is - “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans to Benefits Today’s Youth”.

Patriots’ Pen: While almost the same as the VOD, the Patriots’ Pen program is geared toward younger students in grades 6 thru 8 who write a 300-400-word essay, also based on a Patriotic theme. The first place winner in the Department receives a savings bond and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, where the top national winners receive savings bonds of up to $10,000. This year’s theme is “Why America’s Veterans Should be Honored.”

The Fourth of July: This Independence Day celebration will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a Flag Retirement ceremony conducted by our Scout Troop 40. We will then have a Post Picnic from 5:30-7:00. From 7:30-11:00, we will have entertainment provided by the Phoenix Band Country & Western Variety music. I hope to see you all there.

As some of you know, I can be found at the Post almost every night and most weekend days; so if you have any suggestions for the year ahead, don’t hesitate to let me know and I will be more than happy to pass them on to Melissa and Chris.

And one final time – I’d like to say ”Great Job” to last year’s officers, and “Good Luck” to the incoming officers this year – and of course, this includes Glenn Holman!

As always, yours in comradeship,

... Rowdy
