February 2010

Comrade Marshall E. McSpadden, 87, passed away December 30, 2009.  He was from West Blocton, Alabama.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and retired as a Senior Chief Gunner’s Mate after 30 years of service.  He also retired from Hampton Roads Sanitation.  He was also a member of Fleet Reserve Branch #60; and American Legion Post #327. 

His loving wife Ruby, preceded him in death. Survivors include stepchildren James E. Horne and Carol J. Horne; his good friends of many years, Mary Lee and Jerry Lupejkis; several step-nieces and nephews; and many friends who loved him. 

His funeral was held January 4th at Smith & Williams Funeral Home (Norfolk Chapel), with burial following in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

 Comrade Albert W Gribble, 96, died January 20, 2010.  A Norfolk native he was the son of the late William D. and Julia L. Gribble and the widower of Annette Gribble.

 He served in the U.s. Navy during WWII and later retired from civil service.

 A viewing was held JANUARY 22ND AT Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home (Tidewater Chapel).  Burial arrangements will be made at a later date.

Comrade Marcus Stelios Peris, 88, passed away December 14, 2009.  Born in Kardamyia, Chios, Greece, he was a resident of Norfolk for the past 63 years.  He was a member of annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and served in the U.S. Navy during Wll aboard the Carrier USS Franklin (CV13).  He was also a member of American Legion Post 60, and was the owner of Peris Painting Company until his retirement in 1985.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Bessie; daughter Patricia P. Longworth; sons Tony and Steven; two grandsons, Marcus and Ernest Longworth; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Barbara Jordan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins’.

The Trisagion Service was held December 18 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral by the Rev. Father Constantine Rogakos, with burial following in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Comrade Cecil Warren Ashley, 91, passed away December 27, 2009.  A native of Edenton, NC, he was an Army Veteran of Wll, and later he retired from civic service at the Naval Air Station (Norfolk).  He was also a member of Miles Memorial Methodist Church; Norview Masonic Lodge #113, AF&AM, Norfolk Scottish Rite, Khedive shrine temple; Moose Lodge; and the I.B.E.W Local.

He is survived by his wife; sons Russell Dye and Shane Dye; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Larry and Andrew Lepore; and a life long friend, Lou Slack.

His funeral was held December 30 at Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, with burial following in Ever Green Cemetery, Portland, NY, at a later date.

Comrade Stephen Alson Jeffreys, 67, passed away October 23 in a local hospital.  A native of Omaha, NE., he retired from the U.s. Navy having been previously a veteran of the Army and Air Force, for a total of 22 years service.

He was currently employed with the Aviation Support Detachment, Norfolk, as a supply techniciann.  He loved to travel and swim and was a great cyclist.

He is survived by his wife, Helen.  Services will be held at a later date.  Contact Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, for further information.

Comrade Casper L. "C.:." Mercer, 76, passed away November 6.  He was born in Lumberton, NC and was predeceased by his parents, four brothers and a sister.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Yvonne Hickman Mercer; son, Rick; daughter, Lisa; their husbands; and grandchildren Brooke and Conner Borkowski.

C.L. was a Korean War veteran and retired from the Virginia State ABC Board; and was a frequent visitor at the Ocean View Democratic and Social Club.

A memorial service was held at Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, November 9, followed by a wake at the Democratic and Social Club.

Life Member Comrade Edward M. Brockdorff, 74, passed away November 17 in Newport News.  A native of our Nation's Capital, he had retired from the City of Norfolk as a pump station manager after 35 years following his active military service.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 327 and the Ocean View Democratic and Social Club.

He is survived by a sister, Esther Smith; sister-in-law Florence Brockdorff; 3 nephews, 3 nieces, and many great-and great-great-nieces and nephews.

His funeral was conducted Friday, November 20 in Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, with Dr. J.D. Norris, Jr. officiating.  Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

 

October 2009

Past President of the Ladies auxiliary Department and our own Post 3160, Margaret K. Haddaway, 85, Wife of Life Member Comrade Louis S. "Jack" Haddaway, passed away September 25th.  Born in Roanoke, Virginia, she was past co-owner and retired from Haddaway Florist, well known for many years in Wards Corner (Norfolk).  she was also past president of the Througood Garden Club and Lions Club of Lady Lake, Florida.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Fayelaine; 2 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.

A celebration of her life will be held September 30 at Knox Presbyterian Church (Norfolk), with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery at a later date.

September 2009

On August 17, Life Member Comrade William E. Simmons, 69, answered the call of the supreme Commander in his home in Norfolk.

A native of Minnesota, he retired from the U.s. Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant after 21 years of service having served in Vietnam.  He was also a member of the Marine Corp Cryptologic Association, American Legion, and the Fleet Reserve.

He is survived by his sons, Richard, Kevin, William and Kenneth, and their wives; Sisters Ardith Mosier and Mary Dewitt; brothers Michael and Thomas; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted August 28 in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Chapel, by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood, during which Post 3160 gave the VFW Ritual.  Similar honors were given by members of American Legion Post 327 and the Fleet Reserve.

Following the chapel service, Marine Corps honors and Taps were given outside.  He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Past Department Commander (2002-2003) Comrade Lawrence (Larry) Mattera, 60, answered the call of the Supreme Commander August 5th following a long and courageous battle with emphysema, COPD, and asthma.  Although not a member of Post 3160, he was well known to many of our members throughout Tidewater.  He leaves behind numerous relatives and friends.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of 20 years and served two tours in Vietnam.  He then became a general contractor and retired from civil service as a protocol officer at Fort Eustis.  He was a member of VFW Post 5500, which he revived after being inactive for many years.

After being in a coma for 37 days in 2002, he recovered and went on, in spite of his illness, to serve in many committees to help veterans, including much hard work to make the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk a reality.  He never met a stranger and was always the first in line to help a veteran.

His funeral was conducted, with VFW Rites, August 10 at Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton, with interment following at Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery.  the family wishes memorial contributions to be made to Operation Uplink, c/o VFW State Headquarters, 403 Lee Jackson Highway, Staunton, VA 24401.

August 2009

Comrade Monte LeRoy Blackwell, 77  was born in Indianapolis.  He served his country in the U.S. Navy in both Korea and Vietnam; and later retired as a police officer with the Virginia Port Authority.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 36 years, sue E. Vaughan Blackwell.  He was also a member of Oak Grove United Methodist church, Fleet Reserve, Ruth Masonic Lodge#89, and the Khedive Shriners.

He is survived by his children, Lynn Beiber, Laura Blackwell, Lisa Tomlinson, donna white, Janice Barnard, Colleen Hunt, and Ralph R. rocky" Vaughan, Jr.; sister Suzanne Weiss; 9 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held July 18 in Oak Grove United Methodist Church, the Rev. Randy McMillan officiating; with burial following in Forest Lawn Cemetery; Norfolk.

Comrade Billy Harold Harrison, 82, passed away May 26.  Born in Birmingham, AL, he was a 50 year resident of Norfolk.  He was a World War ll Veteran, having served with the navy's Anti-submarine Air Group in Europe and the Pacific areas.

Billy joined Fore Motor Company in 1955, retiring as a zone manager in the auto Lie Division.  He also represented Ford in the early days of Stock Car Racking, working with many drivers and teams promoting the sport.

He was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church; a Master Mason with Ocean View Masonic Lodge #335; A 32-Degree Scottish Rite of Free Masonry Valley of Norfolk Orient of Virginia and a Shriner with Khedive Temple of Chesapeake.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; Daughter Elaine; Granddaughter Kimberly; and numerous other relatives.

He was predeceased by his parents, Hiram and Sadie Harrison; his first wife, Rosalie; Aunt Sarah; and brothers Andrew and Joe Jean.

His funeral was conducted May 30 in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home (Tidewater Drive Chapel) by the Rev. Daniel Phillips Abbot officiating; with burial following in Colonial Grove Memorial Park.

Comrade Gaines Edgar Walker, 85, passed away May 30.  He was the son of the late Harry and Betty Adams and the widower of Alice Walker.

He retired as a Chief Radioman from the U.S. Navy and was a World War ll Veteran.  He was a member of Ocean View Baptist Church; Willard Masonic Lodge #626 Af&AM, Willard, Ky; Ocean View Masonic Lodge #335; Khedive Shrine Temple; Norfolk Scottish Rite bodies and York Rite (Knights Templar), Norfolk; Order of Eastern Star Chapter #34 Norfolk; Norfolk Royal Arch Ch.1; American Legion Post #327; and he was a Kentucky Colonel.

He is survived by  brothers Wilbur, Calvin and Leondas; and a beloved friend, Lillian White of Norfolk.

At 6:00 P.M., June 3, Post 3160 conducted a Ritual at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, with his funeral held there June 4 by the Rev. Ernest Trueblood; with burial following in Rosewood Memorial Park.

Comrade Grover C. Bowenn, 92, passed away June 13 in Heritage Hall, Virginia Beach.  Born in Webb, WV he retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant.  He was a veteran also of the U.S. Navy and a member of the USS Hornet Survivors Association.  He was also a member of the Virginia National Guard, Ocean View Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Khedive Temple, Order of the Easter Star #34, American Legion Post 327, and long standing member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife Jeanette Lillian, daughters Darlene and Linda Lee; brother Charles; four grandchildren,; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held June 19 in St. John's Lutheran Church with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

 

June 2009

This past month, the post belatedly became aware of the death of Life Member Comrade Thomas I. Singco, 83, who answered the call of the Supreme Commander on February 9, 2009.  Since he passed away at his home in Brooksville, Florida, we were not immediately aware of his demise.

He was born August 5, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but was raised here in Norfolk, moving his home to Florida in 1989.  A Navy Veteran, Comrade Singco served as a Helmsman on the USS ROOSEVELT during the invasion of Normandy (D-Day, June 6, 1944).

He was also a member of the Chesapeake Athletic Club as well as the Democratic and Social Club here in Ocean View.  In the 1940's and 1950's, he was one of the original "Chesapeake Street Boys".

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred.  He is survived by his good friends and care-givers, Herman and Pat Barco of Brooksville.

A funeral was conducted May 30 in Hollomon-Brown Funeral home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, with the Rev. Daniel Phillips Abbott officiating, burial following in Colonial Grove Memorial Park.

This past month the call of the Supreme Commander was answered by two Life Members:

Comrade Ceferino P. Zarate, 82, (also known as Frank) passed away March 28.  In 1957, he joined the U.s. Navy and retired as a Chief Storekeeper after 20 years of service.  As a retiree, he was actively involved in the Knights of Columbus 3rd/4th Degree Council #1162; Fleet Reserve Branch 60; Filipino American Veterans of Hampton Roads; St. Pius Filipino-American Veterans Parishioners; and the Maharlika Senior Citizens Group.

He is survived by his wife, Beatriz; sons Philip and Roy; daughter Amy; 7 grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

A memorial service was held April 2 in Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel, Norfolk.

Comrade William Edgar Spalding, 91, died April 11.  A Norfolk native, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth.

He was a WWII Army Veteran serving in the Pacific theatre.  He was a retired Postal Clerk; a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus Council #1162; and the Father Kealy Council 3548, serving 3rd/4th Degrees.

He is survived by his daughter, Doris Parker; son Chris; sister Mary Frances Miller; brother Bernard; grandson Sgt. Keith C. Parker II; and great-granddaughter Ava Marie parker.

 

April 2009

On February 22, the Call of the Supreme Commander was answered by Comrade Harvey I. "Sarge" Martin, 66.  A native of Peoria, Illinois, he served in the US Marines during the Vietnam War; and retired as a sergeant after 26 years on the Norfolk Police Department as a Detective with the Youth and Traffic Bureaus.

Sergeant Martin was also a member of the Knights of Columbus (Knight of the Year 1978 - 79), American Legion, Fraternal Order of Police and Marine Corps League.

In addition to his mother, Jewel, he is survived by his wife of 44 years, Virginia; son Robert; daughter Sharon; four sisters; six grand children, several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was conducted February 26 in Hollomon - Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Chapel.  The Rev. Lamar Senteli Officiating, burial following in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

This last month, the call of the Supreme Commander was answered by two of our best known Comrades who were regulars at Friday Night dinners and many other events at the Post.

Life Member Comrade George S Hughes, Sr., 83, passed away February 5, 2009 of heart failure in the Hampton VA Hospital.

A life-long resident of Norfolk since birth, he was a veteran of WWll and served in the Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater, where he flew 23 missions and earned the Air Medal with four Oak clusters.

But perhaps even more note worthy, we remember him as an outstanding football scholar/athlete.  Among his greatest accomplishments were with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL, where he was described by NFL founder Dan Rooney, Sr., as "one of my finest linemen ever,"  George was named to the All-Time Steelers Team and several Pro-Bowl Teams.

He held a Masters Degree in Education from William&Mary, where he was admitted to Omicran delta Kappa, the National Honorary Leadership Fraternity for Academic, Athletic and Excellence in Leadership.

He earned many awards and honors including: All-American lineman, College of William and Mary; Virginia Sports Hall of Fame; and the College Football Hall of Fame.

He received many other sporting honors including Coach for the Norfolk Neptunes (Continental Football League) and Ottawa Rough Riders (Canadian Football League).  His teams won championships in both leagues.

George served in many public and civic capacities including the NFL Alumni Association, Norfolk City Councilman, Norfolk School Board, Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, Ocean View Masonic Lodge (Scottish Rite 33rd Degree), Khedive Temple, Lions Club of Ocean View, Ocean View Social and Democratic Club, American Legion, American and Virginia Hardware Associations; and he ran a successful hardware business in Ocean View for many years.  He became known as the "ocean View Oak."

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kate; his children, Dr. George S. Hughes, Jr., M.D, FACP; Kathy Gillette and Susan Anderson; and seven grandchildren.  His "viewing" literally overwhelmed Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home (Tidewater Drive Chapel) where nearly 1,000 people waited to enter the building exceeded well over an hour.  Services with Masonic Rites were conducted by the Rev. Kathleen M.R. Monge in the funeral home on February 9, with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery following.

Life member Comrade Peter Tyrpak, 66 passed away February 6, 2009 at his home in Norfolk.

Born in Old Forge, Pa, where he graduated from high school in 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1964, retiring as a Master Chief Petty officer after 30 years service.  His field was Naval Aviation, where he served with various squadrons and the Carrier USS Ranger during the Viet Nam War.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 327 and the Fleet Reserve.

"Pete" is survived by his wife, Loretta (they celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary last July); sister Anna; brother Walter; a niece, nephews, great-niece, two great- nephews, aunts and cousins.

His funeral with military honors was held February 11 at the Semian Funeral Home, Taylor, Pa; with services at St. Michael's Orthodox Church, Old Forge, by the Rev. John Souck (Rector) and the Rev. Elias Krennitsky (cousin).  Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Life member Comrade John Millard Smith passed away December 23, 2008 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.  "Smitty" was born October 2, 1939 in Washington County, Ohio, and raised in Springboro, Ohio, the son of the late Russell and Clara Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; sons, Jeff, Craig, Brian, and Chris; grand daughters Jenna Lee, Haley Ryan, Casey Nicole, and grandson Copeland John Daniel Smith; Brothers Bill and Dave Smith; sisters Sue Brunk and Charlotte Carter.  He served more than 32 years in the U.S. Navy and retired as the Command Master Chief of Portsmouth Naval Hospital.  Following his retirement, he and his wife relocated to the Tampa Bay Golf & Country Club Community in San Antonio, Florida.

Life Member Comrade Marion "Mark" Martin, 82, passed away January 5, 2009.  A native of Mahone, WV.  he was a disabled veteran, having served furing WW ll, Korea and Viet Nam,  He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shiners', Knights of Pythias, and other organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Hilda; children Donald, Phyllis, Barbara and Edward. stepchildren Allen, Dixie and Gary; and his loving grand children.  His funeral was held January 9 in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, with burial following in Forest Lawn Cemetery with full military honors.

Life member Comrade Woodrow Browne " Dan" Daniel, 90, passed away January 10, 2009.  Born in Jamaica Virginia, he was the son of the late Harvey and Temple Daniel. He was preceded in death by his brother Hiram, sisters Marjorie Robbins and Helen Lundin; and son John L. Daniel.  He was also a member of the Seasoned Couples Club of Virginia Beach and Fleet Reserve Association.

Joining the U.S Navy in 1936, Dan served aboard four battle ships, USS Utah, USS Idaho, USS Alabama ( of which he was a plank owner) and USS Mississippi.  Before World War ll began, his ship was involved with the search for Amelia Earhart.  Retiring in 1940, he worked for Lockheed Aircraft in California. While there, he helped to build the P-38 Lightning aircraft. Recalled to duty after Pearl harbor, he served as a Turrent Captain in the North Atlantic and North Sea.  While on USS Alabama, the ship hunted for the German Battle Ship Turpitz, and then went to the South Pacific.

He retired from the U. S navy with 20 years of service as a Chief Gunners Mate, and had earned numerous medals and awards.  He then worked at the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard for 24 years as a leading man.

Dan is survived by his wife of 64 years Dorothy; daughter Kay D. Greyard; sons Tom and Roger;  six grand-children, six great-grand children, brother Roland, and various other relatives.

His funeral was held January 11 in Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, with burial following in Princess Anne Memorial Park.

Comrade Richard b. McComb, 89, passed away January 13, 2009 in Norfolk.  A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he was the son of the late Robert and Rilla McComb, and widower of Loretta L. McComb.

He retired from the U.S. Navy with 23 years' service as a Chief Boatswain's Mate.  He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Assn.  He is survived by daughters Loretta, Kem and Margaret; brother Robert; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; special friend Patti; and predeceased by daughter Maureen.

A graveside service was conducted January 17 in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Life Member Comrade Henry Wertz Driver, 82, passed away January 15, 2009.  Born in Rutherford County, North Carolina, he was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Ruth Driver and Brother Fred Driver, Jr.  He is survived by his wife Carol; sister Sandra; nephew Fred; niece Lorraine; and extended family and friends.

He was a WWll veteran, a manager for Quaker Oats Company for 12 years, and started Henry Driver Landscaping in 1978, retiring in 2008.  He was also a Life Member of DAV Chapter 4, member of the American Legion and wrote for the Ocean View Times for many years.

A Memorial Service will be held January 31 at Post 3160.  Rev. Warren from the DAV will be officiating.

 

January 2009

This past month, we have had only one call of the Supreme Commander:  Comrade Harry Mullin, Jr., 86.  A native of Delaware, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief after 30 years of service.  There after, he retired from Civil Service at Public Works after 20 more years.  he was also a member of AARP.

He is survived by his wife Glenda, sons Patrick and Richard; two grand children and stepson Robert McNulla.  A graveside service was held December 18 in Forest Lawn Cemetery, the Rev. Ernest Trueblood officiating.

Since our last newsletter, the call of the supreme Commander had been received by three of our Life Members:

Comrade Frank Sandstrom, 91,  on October 30, 2008.  Retired from the U.S. Navy, he is survived by his wife, Cathy; daughters Faith Atkins and Helen Berry; son-in-law Bobby Goodman; brother Steve; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Helen Sandstrom; brother Harold; and sister Jeanette.  His funeral was held on November 3 in Rose Wood Kellum Funeral Home, with burial with Military Honors following at Rosewood Memorial Park.

Comrade Stanely W. Smigiel, 84, on November 4, 2008.  A native of McKees Rocks, Pa. and a resident of Norfolk since 1970, he was the son of the late Ignatius and Theophila Smigiel.  He retired from the U.s. Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, having served 30 years.  He was a veteran of WW ll, Korea and Viet Nam.  He later worked for and retired from the City of Norfolk as head maintenance for the Norfolk Library System.  He was also a member of the American Legion.  Mr. Smigiel is survived by his daughter, Regina Gechter and her husband Richard.  Sons Thomas R. Smigiel, John Joseph Smigiel and Stanley Steven Smigiel; three grand children,, and three great-grandchildren.  A funeral mass was held November 8th in St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas Powers, with burial following in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Comrade Thomas Russell Childers, 80, on November 17, 2008.  Born in Gaffney, SC, he was the son of the late Tomrus Sell Childres and Lucy Stepp Childers.  Comrade Childers was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWll, where he received the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon with Star and the Purple Heart while serving aboard the USS Wilhoite and USS Bull.  He was also a member of the Under-aged Veterans Association and American Legion Post 280.  Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Margaret; son Thomas Russell Childers, Jr.; and daughter Deborah Childers Hennessy; Six grand children; one great-grand daughter; brother Raymond; three uncles; and a host of nieces and nephews.  A funeral, with Military Honors, was conducted November 22nd in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory.  Interment will be at a later date

The Post was greatly saddened to learn that the call of the Supreme Commander has gone out to three of our Comrades:  On August 26, Comrade James Harry Charleton, 61, passed away in DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk. A native of Cambridge, Ohio, he was retired from the Department of the Interior as a World Heritage advisor, the Office of International Affairs. He re turned to Norfolk after retirement, but continued as an advisor to the National Park Service in Washington. He was active for many years in the politics of Arlington, VA, where he resided for 30 years.

He graduated with high honors from both Granby High School (Norfolk) and Northeastern University (Boston). He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam war as an English teacher to Vietnamese officers.  He was fluent in a number of languages and a scholar with a sense of humor.

He is survived by his father, CDR Basil Charleton, USN (Ret.); his special friend, Emily of Norfolk; sisters Faye Hopkins and Elizabeth Cole; an extended family of Cambodian and Vietnamese immigrant friends; and his foster son Remy Kim.

A memorial service was conducted on August 29 at Hollomon-Brown (Tide water Drive Chapel) with Emily Kircheval officiating.

Comrade Benny Fefer, 83, passed away September 5, after a long illness. Born in Poland, he was a survivor of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.  He joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and served heroically in the Korean conflict where he was injured. Upon recovery, he was as signed as manager of the Officers’ Club in Stuttgart, Germany.  He moved to the United States in 1956 with his wife of 52 years, Margo. He retired after 26 years with Fancy Foods of Virginia.  He was a long time member of Temple Israel; Disabled American Veterans; and the U.S. Army MacArthur Memorial Chapter.

He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Rios. A celebration of his life was held September 8 at the Good Sheppard Mausoleum Chapel in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Life Member Comrade William L. Luhman, 68, who lived in Ocean View. A native of La Crosse, Wisconsin, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer after 32 years of service.  He is survived by his wife, Chris, 7 children, 21 grand children, 4 great-grandchildren, and a sister Patricia.

A Mass of the Resurrection was conducted September 22 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with burial following in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

The Post was saddened to learn that the call of the Supreme Commander was answered by Life Member Comrade Billy Jack Flemming, 76, who passed away on August 13.

A native of Rich Hill, MO, he had retired as a Chief Commissaryman after 20 years’ service. He was a veteran of both World War II and Korea. He had also retired as a supervisor from the Dominion Peanut Corp. He was also a member of Fleet Reserve Association Branch 60.

Jack is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pauline; daughters Kathy and Mary; son Paul; sister Norma; and nephew Carl Bolton.

His funeral will be conducted at a later date at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran’s Cemetery with military honors.

Also answering the call of the Supreme Commander was Life Member Comrade James D. Taggert, 82, who passed away August 14. He was born in Freeborn MN. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred; son David; grandson John-Michael; brothers David and Joseph; and sisters Mary Agnes, Margaret and Catherine.

A Navy veteran, he retired from the City of Norfolk as a plumbing inspector; and was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. He is survived by his second wife of 35 years, Catherine; five children and their spouses; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brothers Edward, Paul and John Irvin.

A Memorial Mass with military funeral honors was held August 28 by Fr. Brian Rafferty, with internment following in the church columbarium.

The Post was saddened to learn to learn, as the month of June was drawing to a close, that the call of the Supreme Commander was answered by Life Member Comrade William Albert Boswell, Sr., who, at age 78, passed away from a sudden illness on June 27.  A native of Madison County, NC, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; a son, James; and a daughter, Deborah Brown.  An avid fisherman and gardener, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

 Left to cherish his memory are his sons, William and his wife Julie; Joseph and wife, Cheryl; daughters Cynthia Ann, Paula Gail Rose; sister Lee Vanarsdale; Special Friend, Doris Barwick; 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grand children.

His funeral was conducted at Hollomon Brown, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Tuesday July 1, by Pastor Sarah Eason Williams and the Rev. George Diggles, with burial following in Rose Wood Memorial Park.

Comrade John A. Fitzgerald, Jr. 92, passed away June 1. He was predeceased in 2002 by his wife of 61 years, Annie Laurie Gilbert Fitzgerald; his son, John in 1991, and his three brothers and three sisters.

A master bricklayer, Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church and retired from the Naval Amphibious Base in 1982. He was a proud veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific. He was also a member of the DAV, and a Past Master of Ocean View Masonic Lodge #335 AF&AM.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews, and many good friends. A graveside service was held June 7 in Forest Lawn Cemetery, the Rev. Kathleen M.R. Monge officiating. Masonic rites were given and military honors accorded.

Comrade Jerry J. Harwood died May 13 in his home in Nor folk. A native of New York State, he was an Army Veteran of both World War II and Korea. Following his military service, he went on to receive his master’s degrees in engineering from both Syracuse University and ODU.

Jerry worked as a civil service engineer for 15 years, as well as for several private firms. He was also a member of the Ocean View Knights of Columbus No. 3548.

Mr. Harwood is survived by his wife, Jean; son John; brother Mark; and many other relatives. A funeral mass was conducted 16 May in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with burial following in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

The Post was in formed by phone of the passing of Comrade James R. Luther, whose last known address was in Moncks Corner, SC. Unfortunately, I was unable to obtain any further in formation about him.

The Post was saddened to learn of the death of Life Member Comrade Wade McKinley Johns, 91, formerly of Smithfield, NC, on March 7. He served in the U.S. Army in WWI and was a fitter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

A graveside service was conducted on March 15 at Oakland Heights Cemetery in Smith field, NC. Surviving are his son Jack; daughter, Veda; sister Estelle; and numerous grand- and great-grandchildren,  He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Pina Lea Albertson Johns.

Life Member Comrade David L. Thibodeau, Jr.,  answered the call of the Supreme Commander on January 28. A native of Waltham, MA, he retired after 27 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Master Chief Petty Officer. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he was also a member of Fleet Reserve Association #60 and Portsmouth Moose Lodge #898.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Arthur and sister Deanne. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, May; daughters Tifany, Renee and Jacqueline; son David; and numerous other relatives.

A funeral was held February 1 in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, with burial following in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

Comrade Henry “Ed” Cluney, passed away on February 4. Although not a member of Post 3160, he was well known through out the region having held numerous offices in the District, and as Past Department Commander. Before retiring, he had been Quarter master of Post 4809 for a number of years.

His funeral was held February 8 in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, which included the VFW Ritual. Burial followed in Rosewood Memorial Park with military honors.

On February 13, Life Member Comrade Richard Rouse’s brother, Jerry, passed away. Further particulars were not available for inclusion here.

Since our last Newsletter, we have lost two more Life Members of our Post, as they answered the call of the Supreme Commander:

Comrade Archer Cleveland McCauley, Jr., 85, passed away September 26. A native of Charlottesville, he retired as a special investigator after 42 years with Equifax Services. He was a former Army sergeant and a WWII veteran.

He had spent more than 70 years racing homing pigeons, was world-renowned as a pigeon breeder and a member of the Hampton Roads Pigeon Club and the American Racing Pigeon Union. He was a former member of the Seaport Fliers and Toastmasters International, the DAV and American Legion Post 327.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce “Anne”; son, David; Daughter Deborah; sisters Lucy Stitler and Barbara Sandridge; 2 granddaughters, a grand son, and their families.

A memorial service with Military Honors was conducted September 29 in Hollomon-Brown Tidewater Drive Chapel, the Rev. John Wolford officiating.

Comrade Orville Phillip Boerner, 85, passed away September 28. A native of Delano, Minnesota, he retired from the U.S. Navy following 30 years of service. He also retired from DePaul Hospital as a manager in the Dietary Department. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and Fleet Reserve Assn. Branch 60.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; sons, Phillip Charles Boerner and David Glen Boerner; sisters Adeline, Isabel, Arlene and Louise; five brothers, Clifford, Bud, Willard, Gerald, and Peter Claver; sisters Adeline, Isabel, Arlene and Louise; sister-in-law Dorothy “Dee: Misiano. He was predeceased by sister Lucille; brothers Fred and James; and his mother- and father-in-law, Emma and Melvin Walberg.

A funeral Mass was celebrated October 4 in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Father Tom Powers.  Entombment with military honors followed in the family mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The Post was greatly saddened by the passing August 1 of Life Member Comrade Richard Lyle Jones, 77, as the result of an automobile accident suffered on June 17th. A native of Snowhill, Maryland, he was also a member of Sinepuxent Masonic Lodge #193 in Snowhill, and the Anglican Church of The Redeemer.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann, and a host of other loving family members and friends. A celebration of his life was held August 8 at Smith & Williams Funeral Home (Norview Chapel) by the Rev. Bo Bryant.

The Post was also greatly saddened by the passing August 9 of Comrade Michael Dudek, Sr., 69, following a long battle with cancer. A native of Poughkeepsie, New York, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a Command Master Chief Petty Officer after 30 years of service. His past duty stations are too numerous to mention here.

He was also a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, a past Grand Knight and past District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus #3548, and American Legion Post #327. He served on several civic committees in Norfolk including the Mayor’s Ocean View Task Force and the Norfolk Homeless Committee. He was also a long time supporter for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons Michael, Jr. and Stephen; 8 grand children; sisters Joan Keil and Florence Gallagher; and brothers John, Thomas and Joseph Dudek.

Rituals by American Legion Post #327 and VFW Post #3160 were performed August 15, with a Mass of the Resurrection conducted August 16 in St. Pius X Catholic Church. A graveside service with full military honors will he held in Arlington National Cemetery October 25.

 

July 2007

The final call of our Supreme Commander was answered recently by Life Member Comrade Robert A. Benzel, 76, who passed away June 20. A native of Altoona, PA, he had retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer; and also retired in 1988 from New port News Ship building as a training instructor. He was very active in the wrestling community in the Tidewater area, especially the Kellam High School wrestling team coached by his son, Mike.

He was a veteran of Korea and the Bay of Pigs, served as a docent for the USS WISCONSIN since 2001; and also belonged to the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 60; American Legion Post 327; Ocean View Democratic and Social Club; Coalition of Good Government; and the Virginia Beach Coaches Association for 17 years.

In addition to his son, Mike, he is survived by his wife, Ella “Denise”; daughter, Susanne Carol Hardin; stepdaughter, Melissa Connelly; two stepsons, Michael Master son and Gary Masterson; sister, Carol Banks; brother Richard; six grandchildren and four step grandchildren.

The VFW Ritual was conducted June 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Tidewater Drive Chapel, where his funeral was con ducted June 22, followed by burial with military honors in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suf folk.

We were also greatly saddened to learn of the demise of Past Department Auxiliary President Jackie Saunders, who passed away on May 30th after a long bout with cancer. A small funeral service was held at Altmeyer Funeral Home in Virginia Beach on Mon day, June 4th, followed by burial at Albert Horton Memorial State Veterans Cemetery. The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 4809 conducted a funeral ritual at the cemetery.

The final call of our Supreme - Commander was answered recently by Life Member Comrade Early Norman Cox, Jr, 58, who passed away May 4. A  Norfolk native, he had retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after being highly decorated for his service in Vietnam. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his sister, Madeline Tuck; brother, Johnny Wayne Cox; half-sister, Maria Rawls; nieces Jessica Cox and Elizabeth Rawls; and nephews Troy Tuck and David Supper.

A memorial service was held May 8 in Hollomon-Brown Tidewater Drive Chapel. Included were a Masonic Rite Service and the VFW Ritual performed by members of Post 3160.

May 2007

The final call of our Supreme Commander was answered recently Life Member Comrade Wesley Arvin Seals, 66, who passed away April 19.  A native of El Dorado, Kansas, he joined the Navy after high school.  During his 26-year career, Wes was a diver first class, serving his country proudly for three tours in Vietnam for which he received many decorations and honors.

Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked for Commonwealth Masonry in Norfolk.  He belonged to the Tidewater Blacksmith Guild, and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and working on his truck, "Ole Yeller".

He leaves behind a son, Wesley of Fontana, CA; daughter Tyke of Phoenix, AZ; mother Genevieve of El Dorado; stepdaughter Amu Hansen of Norfolk; and five grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will take place at Commonwealth Masonry on May1.  Contributions in his name may be made to Vets House, PO Box 13278, Chesapeake, VA  23325.

The final call of our Supreme Commander was answered recently by two Life Members of the Post:

Comrade Charles O. Mitchell, Jr., 83, passed away February 25 in his home.  A native of New Haven, CT, and a long-time resident of Norfolk, he had retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer after 21 years of service; and also retired from Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock after 20 years.

He was also a member of Fleet Reserve assn., Branch 60, and American Legion Post 327.  he was Episcopalian, a 32nd degree Mason and  Shriner, an avid camper, NASCAR enthusiast, and a bluegrass music lover. He is survived by his wife of 40 yeas, Ida; sisters Barbara and Doris; four brothers. Donald, George, Robert and Russell; and was predeceased by brothers Edward and Leonard.  His funeral was conducted February 28 at Hollomon-brown, Tidewater Drive Chapel, which included rituals by the Fleet Reserve, American Legion, Shriners, and VFW Post 3160.  Burial with military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Comrade Joseph C. Robinson, 89, died March 3rd.  A native of Rogersville, AL, he was predeceased by his wife Grace; a brother, Clayton; three sisters, Ora Lee, Dollie and Augazelle.

Joseph and his wife were founding members of Diamond Springs Christian Church.  He had retired from the U.S. Navy after 27 years of service.

He was a member of Norview Blue Lodge 113, Fleet Reserve, Scottish Rite of Norfolk and Perquimans County, NC; Past Commander of the Legion of Honor in the Khedive Temple; Elizabeth City Shrine Club, and Durants Neck Ruritan Club.

He is survived by sons, Carl, Joe and John; sisters Gladys, Virginia and Ramona; four grandsons and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral was conducted March 8 at Woodlawn Funeral Home, Norfolk, with Pastor Carolyn Schwarz officiating.

Information reached me too late to appear in last month's newsletter about the tragic and untimely death of Corporal Edward Wesley (Eddy) Johnson, Jr. USMC, who answered the final call of the Supreme Commander on November 9 in San Antonio, Texas in an auto accident.  A life-long resident of Katy, TX, Cpl Johnson was born October 23, 1980 in Houston, attended Katy High School and graduated from Parkway Christian School.  He attended Texas A&M where he studied Fire Sciences and served as a firefighter and paramedic with I-10 Volunteer Fire Department and the Houston Fire Department before joining the Marines in March 2000.

Cpl Johnson served with the USMC Security Forces as an Amphibious Tractor Crew Chief, and was deployed as a Scout/Sniper in Afghanistan, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.  He was currently undergoing specialized training in the San Antonio area prior to a scheduled deployment to Iraq in February, 2007.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward W. Johnson, and his maternal grandmother, Earlene Sanders.  He is survived by his wife, Shannon, and a son, Edward W Johnson lll of Katy; daughter, Samantha of Grand Junction, CO; mother, Trish; brother, Jeremiah; and a number of other relatives and his Marine Corps brothers and sisters.

His funeral, with full military honors, was held November 14 at Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Katy, the Rev. Billy Watson officiating.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the loving concern and kindness shown to them by the members of 4th RECON Battalion, "Charlie" Company and especially the members of Team Three.

Memorial gifts may be made to Post 3160, in care of John Litz, for Operation Helmet and the purchase of equipment to be used by Marines currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Also answering the call of the Supreme Commander was Clayton T. "Rudy" Rudolph, on December 4, just sixteen days shy of his 85th birthday.  He was known around Ocean View as "I.R. Rudy".  He had retired from the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman 1st Class; and also retired from the Virginia Health Department as a supervisor in the Shellfish Sanitation Division.

Rudy was born in Nova Scotia and later moved to Medford, MA.  After he retired from the Navy, he made his home in Norfolk.  He was past president of Forest Lawn Civic League, old members of 3rd Presbyterian Church, Seabrell Hunt Club, past Vice-President of the Fleet Reserve Branch 60, American Legion Post 327, and the Lunker Fishing Club.  He had the distinction of being the last "Top Banana" of the Monkey Bottom (OV Area) branch of th I.O.O.B (The "illegitimis non-Car Borundum Est") and was the #1 Sugar Daddy for the N.O.O.B's. a women's group.

A celebration of his life was held December 17 at Post 3160; and memorial service was held December 23 at the 3rd Presbyterian Church.

Rudy's role in life was serving.  His generous spirit keeps giving, even after death, through his body's donation to medical science.

The final call of our Supreme Commander was answered by Comrade Daniel B. Orts, Jr., who passed away December 27, 2006.  A native of New Jersey, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief after proudly serving his country for 21 years.  He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Branch 60.  He enjoyed Country and Western music and bass fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years.  Roberta; two children, Daniel B. Orts, lll, and Dean B. Orts; his mother, Grace Southard; three grandchildren, Alexis, Gabby and Eddie; nine brothers and sisters; and several "best friends".

His funeral was held December 30 in Altmeyer Funeral Home. Southside Chapel, during which members of Post 3160 performed the VFW Ritual.

The final Call of the Supreme Commander was also answered by Comrade Joseph F. Duncan, a Life Member, on 31 December 2006, during a hospitalization in Japan, where he was working for the Navy Exchange on Naval Air Facility, Atsugi.

No further particulars are known as we were informed by e-mail of his passing.

 

During the past month, three of our Life Members have answered the call of the Supreme Commander:

William N. "Buck" Williamson, 85, passed away November1.  A native of Norfolk, he was a member of Community United Methodist Church, Doric Masonic Lodge #44, past member of Kempsville Ruritan Club, and Post 5, 29th Division Association.

He was a D-Day veteran landing on Omaha Beach with the 11th Field Artillery National Guard.  He retired from Civil Service in 1974, was a bailiff for Virginia Beach Circuit Court and later volunteered for the court system.

He is survived by his wife, Gaynelle; son, John; daughters Arlene White and Alice Fentress; brother, Marion (Moonie) Williamson; 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by a brother, Roy P. Williamson, Jr.

A funeral along with Masonic rites was held November 3 in Community United Methodist Church by the Rev. Brad Phillips; followed by a graveside service with military honors in Princess Anne Memorial Park.

Past Post Commander Milliard Ashton Ledbetter (1954-55), 87, passed away November 3.  He was a retired aircraft mechanic, and a Navy veteran of WWll.  He was predeceased by his first wife, Mayme; brothers, Aubrey, Roger and George (past commander of Post 3160 1958-59); and his second wife, "Mickey", who, after 34 years of marriage, passed away in 2004.

He is survived by daughters, Debbie Raoust Harbin, and Cathy Monaco; granddaughter Christina; grandsons Tony, Olivier and Philippe; brother Dan; and Sister Jane.

A graveside service with military honors was conducted November 8 at Forest Lawn cemetery with Pastor Darren Wiskow officiating.

William "Henry" Morrow, 96, passed away November 8.  A Norfolk native, he was a member of the 29th Division, U.S. Army and a veteran of WWll. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Trench Rats Chapter 4.  He was a founding and lifetime member of the Church of the Epiphany, and retired from Virginia Power after 29 years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jane; and survived by his daughter, Margaret; son, William Henry Morrow, Jr.; sister, Eleanor; 5 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He helped his Maury High School classmates celebrate their 70th reunion this past summer.  He and his wife, spent many volunteer hours at the VA Hospital in Hampton.

A memorial service was held at the Church of the Epiphany November 11 by the Rev. Richard Bridgford and the Rev. Mary Garner.

Edward W. Johnson, Jr. passed away during the month; but no information was available regarding his death.

Two Life Members have answered the call of the Supreme commander.

Jack Helsley, 76, passed away October 2.  Corn in McDonald, Kentucky, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant Commander after 23 years of service, having served in the Korean War, Cuban Conflict and Vietnam.

He spent the next 20 years as an electrician and field service engineer, and again retired.  He shared his skills and experience by instructing technical courses in HVAC at Tidewater Community Collage.  He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic minister for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan; son Steven; daughters Cathy, Vicky, Cindy and Sheri; three sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, 26 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren on the way; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church by Fr. Luke Policicchio October 6, with burial following in Rosewood Memorial Park.

John Elijah Barkley, 74, passed away October 16.  A native of Macon, Georgia, he retired from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander.  He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; brothers Donald, Gene, Jimmy and Buddy; daughters Linda, Tina, Breda, Kathy, Donna, Tammy, Sherry; son Jonathan; twelve grandchildren; his little pride and joy, "Dylan," and Bubba, a loyal nephew and friend.

He was a property manager and landlord to many residing in Ocean View, a deacon in East Ocean View Baptist Church; and a member of Fleet Reserve Branch 60.

A viewing was held at East Ocean View Baptist Church on October 20.  Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, handled his funeral arrangements.

Farley, 79, passed away on September 3.  A native of Cabin Creek, WV, he had retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Petty Officer with 25 years of service.  Thereafter, he retired again from civic service.  He is survived by daughters Janet Miller and Ginger Harrop; son David W. Farley; and brothers Daniel W. Farley, Jr. and Robert Farley.  Private services were handled by Holloman-Brown Funeral home, Tidewater Drive Chapel.

Ray Dalton Weaver, 76, died September 12 in his home.  A native of Johnson City, TN, he had retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.  He was also a member of the American Legion and the Unaka Baptist Church, Johnson City.

Ray is survived by his wife, Grace; son Dalton; daughters Cynthia Weaver Gray and Lisa Simpson; and granddaughters Selina and Crystal Weaver.  A memorial service was held September 15 in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood.

Dale Ross "Klu" Callison, 68, died September 15.  Born in Kellogg Jasper County, Iowa, he was preceded in death by his daughter Teresa Lynn Callison and brothers Wayne and Warren.

Mr. Callison retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years and from Civil Service after 20 more years.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 327, Fleet Reserve, and Ocean View Democratic Club.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; daughters Brenda Lee Wiley, Pamela Jo Thompson, Debra Jean Prososki, Sandra Joanne Springman, Brenda Gregg, and Anna A Knight; sons William Arnold and John Wayne Callison, and James W., and Brett C. Askew; sisters Norma Jean Fanning, Karen Cumming, Judy Parsons, and Reva Mae Duggins.  Also 33 grandchildren, 5 great-grand children, and other relatives.

A chapel service was conducted September 20 in the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel.

Albert James "Sandy" Sands, 85, passed away September 15 in his home.  A native of Dracut, MA, he served a combined total of 30 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy.  A member of Holy Trinity Parish Church, he was a life member of the Knight's of Columbus, 4th Degree; the Alhambra, 6th Marine Division; Marine Corp League; American legion, Fleet Reserve; and the Ocean View Democratic Club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eva, two daughters and one son; and is survived by daughter Margaret Young; Granddaughter Michelle Hughes; grandsons Michael Hughes and Patrick Young; Granddaughters Michelle Stanley and Marianne Bowman; and 4 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by sister-in-law Hazel Fentress, and numerous nieces and nephews.

At 6:00 pm, September 17, rituals were given by the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and Post 3160 in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel.  A Mass of the Resurrection was conducted September 18 at Holy Trinity Church with Fr. David McGlure officiating.

The call of the Supreme Commander was answered by three comrades.

Comrade Donald B. McKigney, 78, a Life Member, passed away August 13, 2006. Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he was a self-employed real estate broker and appraiser.

He was also a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, where he was past Grand Knight of the Father B. Kealy Council # 3548.  A local Ocean View resident and supporter, he along with his fraternal brothers, was instrumental in establishing the annual Knights of Columbus St. Patrick's Day Parade.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter Colleen; two sons, Donald B. Jr. and Brian David; and 4 grandchildren.  His funeral mass was conducted August 16 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, followed by burial with military honors in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Comrade Joseph Michael Lenihan, 79,  went to be with the Lord August 17, 2006.  A native of New York City, he was husband of the late Ida L. Lenihan.  He retired from the U. S. Navy as a Master Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service; and retired again after 20 years of service with the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War ll, Korea and Vietnam, he was active in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, National Assn. for Amateur Radio, Fleet Reserve Association Branch 60, Bayview Civic League, Norfolk Policeman's Association, F.O.P. #28, Ocean View's Masonic Lodge #335, Master Mason, Khedive Temple drum & Bugle Corps, Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies and Destroyer Escort Sailor's Association.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia June and Christine; two sons, Michael and Richard; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and his pets, Bandit, Princess and Snowflake.

A Masonic service was conducted August 20 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel.  His funeral was conducted there August 22, with interment following in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery

Comrade Eugene H. Savage, 79, answered the call of the Supreme Commander on August 20.  He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1967 after 21 years' service, following which he pursued his love of fishing from dawn until long after the sun had set.  After 31 years of marriage, his wife Audrey Mae passed away in November, 1980.

He is survived by his daughter, Betty Ann Owens and son-in-law Stephen E. Owens; Sister Lera; three grandchildren, Gene and Laura Owens of Virginia beach, and SPC Jason Robert Owens serving in the U.S. Army at Ft. Bragg, NC; two stepsisters; one great-granddaughter; an uncle and many nieces and nephews.  A funeral was held August 23 in Hollomom-brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.
